When you need a filling
A cavity is a hole in the tooth caused by decay. Early cavities often cause no pain. As they grow you may notice sensitivity to sweets, hot or cold, or food getting stuck.
Filling a cavity early stops the decay from reaching the nerve, which would then need a root canal.
What happens during the visit
- We numb the area if needed, so you stay comfortable.
- We remove the decayed part of the tooth.
- We fill the space with tooth-coloured material, shape it to your bite and harden it with a special light.
- We polish the filling so it feels smooth.
Looking after your filling
You can eat normally once the numbness wears off. Brush twice a day, clean between teeth, and come for regular check-ups so we can check your fillings.
Common questions
How long does a filling take?
Most single fillings are done in one visit of about 30 to 45 minutes.
Can old silver fillings be replaced?
Yes, if they are worn, broken or leaking. We'll check them and tell you whether replacing them is needed.
Every mouth is different. This page is general information; Dr. Harshali will advise you after examining your teeth.
