When is extraction needed
We always try to save a tooth first. Extraction may be needed when a tooth is too badly broken or decayed to repair, very loose because of gum disease, or a wisdom tooth is causing pain or infection.
What happens
- We take an X-ray and numb the area completely.
- We gently remove the tooth.
- We place gauze to control bleeding and give you clear aftercare instructions.
Aftercare
- Bite on the gauze for the time we advise.
- Don't spit, rinse hard or use a straw on the first day.
- Eat soft, cool food and chew on the other side.
- Avoid smoking, which slows healing.
- Call us if bleeding doesn't stop or swelling keeps increasing.
Common questions
Does tooth extraction hurt?
The area is numbed, so you feel pressure but not pain. Some soreness afterwards is normal and settles in a few days.
Should a missing tooth be replaced?
Usually yes, to help chewing and stop nearby teeth from shifting. A bridge is one option; we'll discuss what suits you.
